MED, Blu & Madlib – Bad Neighbor

MED, Blu and Madlib… it’s got a nice ring to it doesn’t it? It’s been more than two years since we got a taste of this combination with The Burgundy EP and now the trio have released a full album together titled Bad Neighbor.

I’ve been a big fan of all three of these cats for quite some time but to be honest it’s been a while since I’ve been excited by any releases from Madlib or Blu. This is a different story though with Madlib showing that he’s still one of the most creative with the beats, laying the foundation for Blu to show just how good he can be. As for MED, he’s always on point in my books and this is no exception. And to top it off, the album features the likes of Dam-Funk, Oh No, Frank Nitt, MF DOOM, Anderson Paak, Phonte, Jimetta Rose, Aloe Blacc, and Mayer Hawthorne among others. Enough said. This is one of the best hip hop albums of 2015. Get a digital copy here or pre-order the vinyl from Rapcats.

Dudley Perkins – Dr. Stokley

Earlier in the week Dudley Perkins surprised us with a new album released through Mello Music Group. The album, titled Dr. Stokley features production from the Oxnard emcee’s usual crew in Madlib, Kankick and Georgia Anne Muldrow so you know there are going to be some quality beats on this one. As for Dudley, he does his usual thing with more of a focus on rapping than singing. Stream the whole album here.

Madlib x Freddie Gibbs – Thuggin’ [Video]

Well, those who said they wanted Madlib to get back on to some raw hip hop shit definitely got what they asked for here. The video for title track to the Madlib and Freddie Gibbs EP Thuggin’ came through today and it is thuggish as it gets, complete with scarface jackets, guns, coke and hoes.

That might not be your cup of tea, it’s not really ours, but the track is damn good so just play it in another tab if you want…

Georgia Anne Muldrow & Madlib – Seeds

This came out of nowhere but what a surprise. Georgia Anne Muldrow is set to release a new album called Seeds which is entirely produced by Madlib. The title track will be officially released on February 14 but is available for free download now thanks to Rolling Stone. I love it when Madlib collaborates with another artist and produces their entire album. Hopefully this will be as good as some of his past collaborations. The album will be released on March 27 on SomeOthaShip.

Madlib x Freddie Gibbs

Freddie Gibbs has been on his grind recently, doing features all over the show, but now we hear he is teaming up with Stones Throw super producer Madlib for a collaboration EP. I never would have bet money these there two would end up working together, but that’s not the point. Check out a single they have put out below, and stay tuned for more details on the EP.

BBE – Beat Generation 10th Anniversary Edition

Over the course of nine albums in the 2000s for their producer-led Beat Generation series, BBE adopted an unusual stance. “Do what you want,” their artists were told for probably the first time in their careers. The label’s enormously liberal approach was the antithesis of stiff major record label A&R practices, their forward thinking rewarded handsomely by a truly diverse set of albums from some of the world’s most capable hip-hop architects. Among those picked to contribute were Golden Era greats (Marley Marl; Jazzy Jeff); acclaimed DJ/producers whose work habitually blurred genre lines (King Britt; DJ Spinna; Madlib); and those whose regular gigs didn’t afford them the creative freedom they craved (

No-one made better use of the brief than Jay Dee, whose inspired Welcome 2 Detroit showed that despite all the techno and soul that seeped into and out of the Motor City there was still room to be influenced by the Carpenters and Sergio Mendes. Pete Rock, the hip-hop producer’s producer, filled his rapturously received PeteStrumentals disc with classic sample-led tracks packed with drama and finesse. DJ Jazzy Jeff’s The Magnificent celebrated the slew of Philly talent at his A Touch Of Jazz studios, Jill Scott guesting on an exalted Roy Ayers cover in finale. Then there was veteran cellist and arranger Larry Gold, on hiatus from adding strings to hits like Brandy and Monica’sThe Boy Is Mine’, who called upon fellow seasoned pros McFadden and Whitehead and Bunny Sigler for his piece of the puzzle.

This is a digital collection of all the Beat Generation singles with lots of different versions, mixes, instrumentals, accapellas, which is available from BBE’s website now.
