DILLOGRAPHY

Exhibition dates to be confirmed. More information coming soon!

James Yancey aka Jay Dee or J Dilla to most is one of the greatest and most prolific hip hop producers of all time. During his relatively short career he produced tracks for the likes of De La Soul, The Pharcyde, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Common, A Tribe Called Quest and many others and became one of the most sought after producers in hip hop. Few other people contributed so much to hip hop music between the mid nineties and mid 2000′s. Never concerned with being in the limelight, even if you’ve never heard of him, chances are you have heard his music without knowing it was produced by him. Tragically on February 10th, 2006 J Dilla passed away at the young age of 32 from complications associated with the rare blood disease Lupus.

As a tribute to this gifted musician, graphic designer Andrew Peet made it his mission to find every official release that was produced by J Dilla on vinyl for the scores of artists he worked with. He then spent countless hours creating an extremely informative and visually stunning infographic poster that lists each of these releases in chronological order, linking them to all of the artists and showing how they are interconnected. He called it Dillography and the result is something that has to be seen to be understood and appreciated.

In 2012, Peet aims to take this infographic from the print world to the real world. Armed with a stack of vinyl stickers and hundreds of metres of tape, he will turn Open Gallery on the Herengracht into a three dimensional, interactive J Dilla experience giving visitors an opportunity to learn about the music and career of this great musician. Listening posts with all of the tracks will also be set up in the gallery adding to the experience.

This is something not to be missed by anybody who is familiar with J Dilla or has a love for good hip hop music.
