For this month’s Dilla Day track I have selected a track by The Brand New Heavies which J Dilla remixed under the Ummah name along with Q-Tip. It appeared on the double 12″ single in 1997 hidden inbetween a bunch of other remixes of the track. It later appeared on a couple of unofficial Dilla compilation albums and then on the official Delicious Vinyl compilation: The Jay Deelicious Vinyl Years which I think brought it back to the attention of a lot of Dilla fans.
Dilla did a couple of remixes for the Brand New Heavies, the other one was Saturday Night (Remix) feat. Mos Def, but in my opinion this track – Sometimes is the better one.
Whether you have never heard the track before, or you haven’t heard it in a while and this is a nice reminder, or maybe it’s one of your favorite Dilla tracks you play all the time – whatever the case, press play, crank up your system and take a moment to remember and appreciate one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time.
